The first GuavaLab was a ‘pop-up’ concept. This provided a challenge for Aym Design: Propose a design solution with maximal impact on a restricted budget. In addition, GuavaPass wanted to invest in a multi-workout core design concept that would be able to be translated into different locations as the business expanded across the region.
The expansive space within the Mandarin Gallery was originally intended for retail purposes, and the floorplan was not originally structured to house a typical fitness studio. The space also needed to be multi-functional, catering not only for workout classes but also to a diverse range of industry events for GuavaPass and its partners.
Due to the exponential rapid growth experienced by GuavaPass, the GuavaLab project was required to be up and running within 6 weeks, which meant materials needed to be selected, sourced, and installed in a relatively tight timeframe.
To create maximal impact from minimal spending in the GuavaLab, we invested in materials and finishes with strong visual impact. The walls were covered in high-quality brick wallpaper, which accentuated the dramatic ceiling height and assisted in curating urban, edgy street vibes.
A popular brand tagline, the “Do You Guava?” sign, was designed and strategically placed to capture Instagram-worthy moments. We invested in high-quality, comfortable, cool furnishings that captured the lively spirit of the GuavaPass brand and would encourage users to take advantage of the breakout areas.
Local graffiti artists were commissioned to create large-scale bespoke artworks that feature Singapore’s iconic architecture alongside active elements and inspirational quotes. The art added to the sophisticated street feel being curated within the space. Graffiti was painted directly onto mounted plywood panels that can be easily relocated and reinstalled to allow them to move forward with GuavaPass.
To facilitate diverse uses, the floorplan was broken down into zones; a fitness deck, chill-out area, and retail space. The fitness deck was kitted out with an interlocking removable rubber floor system that can be easily extended or packed away depending on the daily events. Text decals were installed to act as wayfinding tools and to frame the retail display.
After the inaugural GuavaLabs fitness studio design’s success, GuavaPass returned to Aym Design to extend its physical presence in Singapore with a 5,000-square-foot hybrid studio — GuavaLabs @ OUE Downtown Gallery.
